Post Report: American Speed Association Kwik Trip 125 –

Elko Speedway – Elko, MN

4/19/2008:  Forty-seven cars turned up at Elko Speedway for the Kwik Trip 125 and ASA Midwest Tour opener and Chris Wimmer saw weeks of hard work pay-off as he landed one of the 26 spots in the feature.  The day started with a 1 ¾ hr practice session where Wimmer held the 11th overall when it concluded. While qualifying, Wimmer’s #52 Chevy became really loose in the cold temperatures of the day and he managed to qualify 19th.  His time of 13.944 a speed of 96.816 mph put him three spots short of the top 16 that automatically got into the feature race. The crew tightened up the car and Wimmer went out and won his qualifying race securing him a spot field.

Wimmer started the Kwik Trip in the 19th starting position steadily moved his way up to 16th by lap 75, avoiding 3 different wrecks that occurred in front of him. At lap 75 the caution was thrown for the mandatory 10-minute break. The car was loose in to the corners, so the crew added a rubber to tighten up the car. The change was a good one as the car tightened on its entry and in the next 50 laps Chris starting picking off the competitors.

“ It was difficult passing tonight, on the high-banked 3/8 mile paved oval track said Wimmer.” The track was slick due to the cold weather and occasional drizzle. After the break with the changes the crew did the car was great. I wish that we would have had a longer race. We were able to start passing and the car was both good on entry and exit. We just needed more laps and I’m sure that we would have finished right up front.

Wimmer finished in the 12th position. It was a stellar field of 47 of the Mid-West’s finest drivers and a great start to the season for Wimmer who hopes to chase the ASA Midwest Tour Championship. The Tour drew an average of 44 cars at its races last year with more expected for this years completion.

Wimmer’s next race will be the Echo Chain Saw 100 at Madison International Speedway on Sunday May 4, 2008. Practice begins at 12:00 noon with qualifying at 3:20 pm. Opening ceremonies are at 4:45 pm with racing starting at 5:00 pm. More information can be found at
