Wimmer Sets Fast Time and Takes Home Another Top-Five Finish

8/31/2008 Norway, MI: Chris Wimmer set fast time in qualifying at Norway Speedway Sunday and then followed it up with his 5th straight top-five finish in the ASA Midwest Tour.

Wimmer’s qualifying time of 14.284 seconds shattered the ASAMT track record in Norway, Michigan.  “I saw some of the guys in front of me turn 14.3’s and I was a little worried to be honest,” says Wimmer, “But when I got out there my second lap felt really good.  It’s always awesome when you can go out and set quick time, so I was really excited.”

With the inverted start, Wimmer began the race from the 13th starting spot.  Just ten laps in to the race a pair of cars in front of Wimmer tangled coming out of turn two.  Wimmer’s #52 Chevy received minor damage, but others would be finished for the night.  “I didn’t see exactly what happened,” says Wimmer, “But I ran into someone and got tapped from behind and then I saw a spot to get out, so I did.  I was pretty lucky because some other cars had some pretty heavy damage.”

Wimmer re-started the race in the 7th position and despite the fact he had the fastest car on the track, was only able to move up to 5th, where he finished.  “It was really hard to pass here,” says Wimmer, “If you try to pass on the outside it takes awhile and you can wear your stuff out, but no one is going to give you the inside either, so it was tough.  I think I could maybe have gotten in to the top three, but I’m definitely pleased with a top-five finish.”

Wimmer now has finished in the top-five in five straight races and with his 5th place finish, owns sole possession of 3rd place in the overall point standings.  “Sunday was definitely a good points day for us,” says Wimmer, “It’s so tight because there are so many good drivers that you have to be able to compete each week.  We’ve been able to do that lately, so hopefully we can keep it going and hold on to that spot in the points chase.”

The Wimmer Racing crew now prepares for the Kim Parsons Memorial 100 Sunday at Marshfield Super Speedway.  “Marshfield is the closest race we have,” says Wimmer, “So I’m excited about that.  It’s funny because I haven’t raced there that many times, but I usually run pretty well there, so we’ll see.”

Practice begins at 10:45 am with qualifying at 2:00 pm followed by ASAMT autograph session at 3:00 pm. Opening ceremonies are at 3:45 pm. For more information visit www.asamidwesttour.com.
