Wimmer Sets New Track Record: Earns Another Top Ten Finish

Saturday was the first time Chris Wimmer ever raced at I-94 Raceway, but based on his performance chances are you would never know. Wimmer watched, as the track record fell not once, but twice before him in qualifying. That was until he went out and put down a lap that topped them all. Wimmer's time of 16.76 seconds now stands as the new track record and made him the fast qualifier for the ECHO Bear Cat July Spectacular 100. "To put down a lap like that the first time I've raced here is pretty awesome," said Wimmer, "I thought we were pretty good in practice, but I didn't know we'd be that good. It was pretty cool."

The inverted start lined the #52 up 14th for race in Sauk Center, MN. By lap 26 Wimmer worked his way up in to the fourth position and appeared that he was going to chase down the leaders. "My car was pretty good right away," said Wimmer, "I was trying to save my tires and stuff, but I saw some of the guys up front start to pull away and I knew I needed to get going."

As Wimmer tried to work his way up to the front, his car began to go away on him. He slid to fourteenth and then rallied back for a tenth place finish. "This place just eats your tires up," said Wimmer, "I could feel them going away and then I got really loose in and out of the corners. I just burned my stuff up trying to get to the front and held on for a top ten."

This marks Wimmer's 4th top ten finish in the ASA Midwest Tour this year and his good showing at I-94 Raceway moves him up to 4th place in the ASAMT overall point standings. "You get a lot of points for qualifying first and anytime you can finish in the top ten is important," said Wimmer, "The points are so close that to make the jump from 7th to 4th is a lot in one weekend and I'm happy with where I'm sitting now. I don't know if it's possible to catch some of the guys at the top, but I'm going to try."

Wimmer has another busy week of racing coming up. He heads to Slinger Speedway, Slinger, WI Tuesday, July15th for the Slinger Nationals and then it's the ASA Midwest Tour "Western Swing" that weekend. The ASAMT will make up it previously schedule race at Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Friday, July 18th and then the Tour is set to race at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa on Sunday, July 20th. "It'll be a busy week," said Wimmer, "But it will be fun. Slinger is always a good time and I'm excited to race at Iowa Speedway, from what I've heard it's a really nice track."
