Wimmer Wraps-up Fourth Place in The ASA Midwest Tour Championship

The ASA Midwest Tour wrapped up its season Sunday at the LaCrosse Speedway in West Salem, WI and Chris Wimmer’s finish put the final touches on his fourth place finish in the series overall point standings.  “To be able to finish top-five in points, our first full year in the series, I think is a huge accomplishment,” says Chris Wimmer, “The guys in this series are so tough and to finish well and stay consistent all season is really exciting.”

Though he ended the weekend claiming fourth in points, Wimmer’s Oktoberfest weekend didn’t exactly go as he hoped.  Things started out well when he qualified the #52 FlipSide Graphics Chevy fifth.  But a change in race format forced all drivers to qualify for the Oktoberfest 100 through qualifying races, with the top ten advancing to the feature. Wimmer began his qualifying race from the 6th starting position and held on for an 8th place finish and a spot in the feature.  “I was definitely happy just to make the race with this different format,” says Wimmer, “But during the qualifying race my car wasn’t as good as it was in qualifying.  I think we had a good qualifying set-up and not a good race set-up.”

So Wimmer and his crew made big changes to the #52 Chevy for the Oktoberfest 100 Sunday.  “We went back to a more traditional set-up that I had been running at a lot of tracks,” said Wimmer, “It seemed like the best option at the time.”

The changes didn’t seem to help, but Wimmer drove his car to a 21st place finish and finished ahead of a couple of drivers who were also in a tight top-five points battle.  “My car just wasn’t very good during the race,” said Wimmer, “We came in under a couple of cautions and tried to make some changes, but ran out of time.  Unfortunately for us there wasn’t another caution so we didn’t get another chance to come back in until the end.  I was hoping to end the season a little better, but to hang on to 4th in points is huge.”

Wimmer has one more race planned before he calls it a season.  He and his crew will head to Nashville, TN the first weekend in November for either the ASA South East Tour race or the CRA race at the Nashville Fairgrounds track.  “I really like Nashville,” says Wimmer, “I always look forward to going there, I’m sure there will be a lot of good cars, so hopefully we can have a good run.”

The ASA Midwest Tour banquet will be held Saturday, January 24th   2009 at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells, WI.  More information will be available on www.asamidwesttour.com
